Noah Schnapp, widely known for his role as Will Byers in the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, has recently shared heartfelt details about his journey of coming out as gay.
In an interview with Variety for their Young Hollywood edition, the Abe actor revealed how portraying the character of Will, who is closeted and has feelings for his best friend Mike Wheeler, played a significant role in his own self-acceptance.
Embracing the realization that his character was gay helped Noah on an exponential journey towards accepting his own sexuality.
He acknowledged that if he had not played the role of Will, he might still be closeted today.
The young actor made his coming out announcement via TikTok on January 5th, where he casually addressed the news with a sense of relief.
In the interview, Noah shared that he had previously come out to his closest friends and family, including his twin sister, mother, and best friend and co-star from Stranger Things, Millie Bobby Brown.
Recounting the moment he came out to Millie, Noah said he attempted to do it in person but found it too difficult.
Instead, he FaceTimed her during a visit to Party City and revealed his truth.
He said, "I kept trying to do it in person with her, and it was too hard. So thenI just FaceTimed her one day in the middle of a Party City and I was like, 'Millie, I’m gay.' And she was like, 'Oh, Schnapper! You told me finally!'"
Millie's response was filled with warmth and support, as she already knew and appreciated his honesty.
The news of Noah's coming out eventually reached the rest of the Stranger Things cast and crew, who showed unwavering support for their co-star.
Co-creator Matt Duffer expressed pride in Noah's courage and simplicity in approaching the revelation.
