Netflix docu-series Depp V. Heard, which is based on the infamous defamation trial of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard does not include any interviews of the Pirates of the Caribbean actor and his ex-wife and the reason has been explained the director Emma Cooper herself.

During her interview with Variety, Cooper explained why she did not want to include anyone’s interview in the docu-series and wanted to display a societal picture she had discovered from Depp v. Heard trial.

“You know, it’s a balanced level of hate,” said Cooper.

She further continued, “I pride myself that it tends to be very 50/50,” referring to fans and detractors of both actors.

Cooper in her interview also clarified that the three-part docu-series does not have any new revelations about the trial or its two subjects.

“I found myself compulsively watching the live feed, and then discussing it with my friends, and looking at what everybody was saying on social. And I wondered what that said about me that I was so interested in what felt like a rather a sad open event of a private relationship,” The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe director said.

Cooper further admitted, “the more I looked into it, I felt like we were in a cultural and social phenomenon. As a documentary maker, I felt there was an opportunity for me to reflect how I was feeling while I was watching it, and I felt that it was a real moment in time.”

“My intention, right from the start, was to make a cogent and interesting reflection of what happened without using interviews or experts,” she added.

Cooper revealed that she also reached out the representatives of both Depp and Heard but not foe the interviews, only to let them know about the docu-series.

“If the lawyers had really wanted to speak, then of course, I would have interviewed them. But I wouldn’t have done one without the other, by the way, because everything has to be balanced,” said Cooper.

To note,  Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's trial was held in Fairfax County, Virginia, from April 11 to June 1, 2022, that ruled on allegations of defamation between the former couple.

Depp, filed a defamation  lawsuit against Heard claiming $50 million in damages.

However, the Secret Window actor won the trial against Heard, who tried to defame Depp by writing an article in Washington Post and accused him of domestic violence.
