HBO left viewers shocked after confirming that the Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty series has been canceled after two seasons.
The network confirmed the cancellation of season 3 of the sports drama series just moments after airing the second-season finale on Sunday night.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty - premiered in March 2022 - revolves around the personal and professional lives of the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team from the 1980s.
Despite the show’s 8.3 IMDb score, HBO confirmed to Variety that the season two finale - aired on September 17, 2023 - was also the series finale.
The show’s abrupt ending left fans furious as they did not get to see the full journey of the basketball team.
The Winning Time co-creator Max Borenstein expressed his thoughts on X, “Not the ending that we had in mind. But nothing but gratitude and love.”
Director Salli Richardson posted on Instagram: “When you give it everything you’ve got, you can have no regrets. I hope you enjoy the last episode of @winningtimehbo I am sure I will do many more hours of TV and hopefully many features in my future, but I can say that at this moment in time I am most proud of the work we did on this masterful show.”
The Winning Time: The Rise Of The Lakers Dynasty cast features John C. Reilly, Adrien Brody, Jason Segel, Jason Clark and Michael Chiklis.
Several other actors, including former University of California basketball player Solomon Hughes also made their television debuts with this show.
