‘Carrie, The Hustler’ star Piper Laurie breathes her last at 91
Piper Laurie passed away on Saturday at her home in Los Angeles
Piper Laurie, renowned for her portrayals of Margaret White in Carrie and Sarah Packard in The Hustler, has left the entertainment industry in mourning after her passing at the age of 91 on Saturday.
Laurie’s death was confirmed by her manager, Marion Rosenberg.
Marion told People that “Ms. Laurie passed away this morning in Los Angeles. She basically died of old age”
She continued, “She was an extraordinary talent and a superb human being.”
As stated by The Hollywood Reporter, the late actress was sick for a while but the exact reason for her death has not yet been revealed.
The late veteran star began her acting career in the late 50s, and she soon reached the heights of fame.
During a discussion with The Wall Street Journal in 2021, Laurie candidly talked about her first acting gig, “When I was 9, my mother asked if I'd like to be in the movies, I was terrifically excited about the idea. So she mailed in a newspaper coupon and a photo of me for a contest. Meanwhile, I wrote and directed a school play.”
She added, “took many years to believe in my own power.”
Laurie has worked with many renowned stars of Hollywood including Donald O'Connor, Tony Curtis, Rock Hudson, Tyrone Power, and even former US President Ronald Reagan.
Marlee Matlin mourns loss of ‘onscreen mother’ Piper Laurie:
Marlee Matlin has paid a heartfelt tribute for “kind” star Piper Laurie on her social media.
Taking to X on Saturday, Matlin wrote, “She was my first onscreen mother and she was celebrated way before we worked together including 3 @TheAcademy Award nominations.”
“I’ll never forget her kind, sweet spirit and fierce talent. RIP Piper Laurie,” she concluded.
