Jo Koy faces backlash on his first hosting gig at 2024 Golden Globe Awards
Jo Koy was announced as the host for the Golden Globe Awards 2024 on December 21, 2023
Jo Koy received rather mixed responses over his first ever hosting gig at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards, held on Sunday, January 7, 2024.
As reported by Variety, the American comedian started off his monologue with very few interactive jokes and scripts.
Koy cracked a joke on Oppenheimer and Barbie, the two competing in the newly created category, best cinematic and box office achievement.
“Oppenheimer is based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project — and Barbie is about a plastic doll with big b-,” he said.
“I loved Oppenheimer, I’ve just got one complaint: It needed another hour,” Koy noted, delivering his punch-line.
He added, “My New Year’s resolution for 2024 is to finish Oppenheimer in 2025.”
Taking a dig at Barbie, Koy said, “It was kind of weird being attracted to a plastic doll” adding the punch-line, “just something about your eyes, Ryan,” as he stared at Ryan Gosling, who starred as Ken in the film.

His joke went downhill as he continued, “The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite and flat feet — or what casting directors call character acting.”
Some groans and disapprovals from the audience prompted a response from the host saying, “Some I wrote, some other people wrote.”
Clarifying his position after his lines fell flat, the standup comedian further stated, “Yes, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me right? Slow down, I wrote some of these and they are the ones you are laughing at.”
As Koy worked in jokes about all the top films of 2023, he took The Color Purple, under the umbrella of his rather puzzling jokes, saying, “What happens to your butt when you take Ozempic.”
The only joke that earned him a big laugh was when he referenced Saltburn star Barry Keoghan’s lengthy nude dancing scene, cracking jokes with multiple angles over the impressive size of his character’s private part.
Jo Koy's dig at Taylor Swift and NFL:
Apart from a rather messy hosting gig over some of the best movies of 2023, Jo Koy tried to crack a joke over Taylor Swift and her beau Travis Kelce.
“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? " he asked.
He continued with his supposed punch-line, "At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift. I swear. There’s just more to go to.”
Taylor Swift appeared unimpressed with the joke as she took a sip of her wine with a poker expression on her face.
