Katy Perry and her sister's tough childhood inspires acts of kindness
Katy Perry along with her sister started the foundation to give kids in underserved communities access to art programs in 2018
Katy Perry revealed her tough childhood inspired her and sister, Angela Lerche to launch a foundation helping underserved kids.
According to PEOPLE, the singer faced tough times with her family, relying on food stamps and food banks for their next meal.
She told the outlet, “you want to talk about food stamps? I can talk about food stamps. You want to talk about food banks? I can talk about food banks. You want to talk about busking in the street as a teenager, hoping to make $20 to cover yourself, I can talk about that too.”
In 2018, Katy and Angela started the Firework Foundation to give kids in underserved communities access to art programs.

Through their foundation, they've created Camp Firework, where kids can learn songwriting, design shoes, and dance.
They even teach them about mental health tools like Transcendental Meditation.
Katy and Angela are hands-on during the camp, spending time with the kids and sharing their own stories of overcoming challenges.
“I'm up with them in the morning, and they're throwing whipped cream on me in the evening, the kids know me as the girl that sang 'Roar' or 'Dark Horse,' but I hope [by the end] they [think], 'I too can live out my dreams like Katy Perry. She's just like me, in a lot of goofy ways,” she shared.
