Princess Kate Middleton offered some impactful advice on smartphone use for parents in a new study released February 2.

The study, published by the Royal Foundation Center for Early Childhood, highlights the importance of the first five years of life.

Titled The Shaping Us Framework, the study focuses on the importance of social and emotional growth in young children, backed by research from academic, clinical, and practitioner experts.

According to a section of the study reviewed by Us Weekly,"Critically, babies and children learn to communicate not just by listening but through social interaction."

The report pointed out a "growing concern" over technoference, which it described as “technology-based interference, such as an adult using a smartphone in the middle of a conversation."

It went on to state that when parents or caregivers experience technoference, it can reduce or limit "critical" interactions with children, which may negatively affect their communication skill development.

"As human beings, we are at our best when we are surrounded by love, safety, and security," Middleton wrote in the foreword of the study.

She further expressed that as humans, we are at our best when we feel safe, loved, and secure, explaining that we thrive when we experience connection, belonging, and acceptance.

"This means taking a profound look at ourselves and our own behaviours, emotions and feelings," she added.

Middleton has been passionate about early childhood development for years. On January 30, Kensington Palace announced that she is now the patron of Tŷ Hafan, Wales’ first children’s hospice, which Princess Diana supported before she passed away.
