Thyroid health in pregnancy: Critical factor for mother and baby’s well-being
Understanding the impact of thyroid disorders on pregnancy health

Thyroid issues are increasingly common among pregnant women and pose significant risks to both maternal and fetal health.
According to several reports, the thyroid gland plays a crucial role in producing hormones that control metabolism, energy levels, and various bodily functions, making it essential for overall health and well-being.
The Regional Technical Chief at Apollo Diagnostics in Mumbai, Dr Upasana Garg asserted: "The most common thyroid problems in pregnant women are hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) and hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)."
"Hypothyroidism makes one prone to fatigue, weight gain and cold sensitivity," she further asserted that it also leads to rapid weight loss and increased heart rate.
She cautioned, “Untreated thyroid problems during pregnancy can lead to complications such as miscarriage, preterm birth, low birth weight, and developmental delays in the baby."
"It is the need of the hour for pregnant women to get timely diagnoses to improve their quality of life as well as ensure a health baby."
Dr Upasana Garg shared the contributing factors, stating: “Family history, age, genetics, autoimmune conditions such as lupus or type 1 diabetes increase the risk, and iodine deficiency can cause thyroid problems in pregnancy."
