OpenAI CEO responds to Studio Ghibli’s Miyazaki’s criticism regarding AI-generated art.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has responded to criticisms from Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki regarding AI-generated art.
Earlier, Miyazaki had described AI-generated animation as "creepy" and "an insult to life itself."
As a response, in an interview with tech founder and YouTuber Arun Mayya, Altman dismissed Miyazaki's criticisms and emphasised the benefits of AI-generated art.
He compared the current state of filmmaking to the past, stating that it was "impossible" to make videos 30 years ago.
However, this statement has been disputed, as the internet and filmmaking capabilities did exist at that time.
Altman noted that AI tools can democratise art and speech, allowing more people to contribute to society.
He stated that with just a smartphone and a dream, anyone can create and share content, benefiting the world.
That said, this view has been questioned, as AI-generated art often imitates existing styles rather than charting new territory.
Many have criticised Altman's views, arguing that AI-generated art is often of poor quality and lacks originality.
They also pointed out that Altman's statements about the history of filmmaking are inaccurate, and that his views on AI and creativity are overly simplistic.
