OpenAI to phase out GPT-4 from ChatGPT soon

OpenAI is set to retire GPT-4, the artificial intelligence (AI) model that powered ChatGPT for over two years.

On April 30, the company will replace the AI model with GPT-4o, the current default model in ChatGPT, which has shown superior performance in writing, coding, and problem-solving tasks.

Although GPT-4 will no longer be the default model in ChatGPT, it will still be available for use through OpenAI's API.

For the unversed, GPT-4 was a significant milestone for OpenAI, with multimodal capabilities that allowed it to understand both images and text.

OpenAI has continued to upgrade and improve its models, with GPT-4o offering enhanced instruction following, problem-solving, and conversational flow.

Moreover, the company is reportedly working on new reasoning models, including GPT-4.1 and o4-mini, which are expected to further advance the capabilities of ChatGPT.

In other news, OpenAI’s GPT-4 model is also at the centre of copyright disputes between OpenAI and publishers, including The New York Times.

OpenAI has claimed that its use of copyrighted material is protected under the fair use doctrine, while publishers argue that their data was used without consent.
