OpenAI to add ID verification for access to upcoming AI models

In a surprising development, OpenAI is planning to introduce a new verification process for organisations seeking access to its advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models.

This move is part of OpenAI's efforts to enhance security around its products as they become more sophisticated and capable.

Taking to its support page, the Sam Altman-led AI startup has published the Verified Organisation status, which aims to unlock access to the most advanced models and capabilities on the OpenAI platform.

To complete the verification process, organisations will need to provide a government-issued ID from one of the countries supported by OpenAI's API.

However, there are some limitations such as an ID can only verify one organisation every 90 days, and not all organisations will be eligible for verification.

According to the company, the verification process is intended to limit the unsafe use of AI while continuing to make advanced models available to the broader developer community.

Notably, OpenAI takes its responsibility seriously to ensure that AI is both broadly accessible and used safely.

Earlier, the company published reports on its efforts to detect and mitigate malicious use of its models, including by groups allegedly based in North Korea.

Additionally, the verification process might be aimed at preventing intellectual property theft.
