While once a controversial and largely denounced trend of the years past, skinny jeans and slim-fitting silhouettes in bottoms are making a gradual comeback in the contemporary fashion zeitgeist and cigarette pants seem to be the latest addition to the return of that style.

Once all the rage during the 1980s, cigarette pants, named after their straight cut, are part of the latest trends that all seem to be evoking nostalgia from decades past, akin to the y2k trends of the 2000s as well as minimalist chic of the 1990s.

Though such fashion greats as Princess Diana and Sex and the City’s Sarah Jessica Parker already perfected the vintage trend during their time, modern icons like Bella Hadid have taken up the mantle in styling the trend with a fresh look and colour palette.

Since the 80s cigarette pants came mostly in shades of faded blue and worn out look, the sharp contrast of a more polished and tout silhouette and darker hues like that of navy blue have elevated the trend’s revival to a new standard, thanks to the supermodel.

Though not entirely skinny, the pants provide the perfect balance between the uncomfortably tight fitting of the skinny jeans trend and the relaxed fit baggy look of most modern denim style.

Vogue described this hybrid as, “an alternative for those who were previously wronged by the skinny jean supremacy of the mid ‘00s.”

As the more popular y2k low-rise jeans trend remains a style favourite and baggy jeans keep sweeping the fashion front, cigarette pants can be a refreshing substitute for the cookie cutter looks that offer little to no variation through the huge Instagram model market which largely dominates and dictates the fashion scene.
