Apple teams up with Anthropic to build AI coding platform
In a remarkable development, Apple is collaborating with Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) startup backed by Amazon, on a new software platform that uses AI to write, edit, and test code.
The development comes as major tech firms intensify their efforts to dominate the generative AI sector.
According to Bloomberg, the platform will be an updated version of the Cupertino-based tech giant’s Xcode programming software and will integrate Anthropic's Claude Sonnet AI model.
This AI-powered coding method, known as "vibe coding," generates code through AI agents.
Apple also plans to deploy the software internally, but it's unclear whether it will be released to the public.
This move is part of Apple's efforts to enhance its AI capabilities and stay competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
For the unversed, the iPhone maker has been partnering with established AI companies and integrating on-device AI features to improve its offerings.
Additionally, other companies, such as OpenAI, are also exploring AI-powered coding tools.
Currently, the Sam Altman-led AI startup is reportedly in discussions to acquire Windsurf, an AI-assisted coding tool, for about $3 billion.
On the other hand, working with Apple could be beneficial for Anthropic, which has recently failed to compete with rivals such as OpenAI, Google, and xAI’s recently released new and better models
