OpenAI plans to build world’s largest data centre in THIS country
OpenAI has planned to develop a massive five-gigawatt data centre campus in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), potentially making it one of the world's largest artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure projects.
This project is part of the Sam Altman-led AI startup’s Stargate initiative, a joint venture with G42, a tech conglomerate based in Abu Dhabi.
The facility, spanning 10 square miles, would consume power equivalent to five nuclear reactors, surpassing any existing AI infrastructure announced by OpenAI or its competitors.
The partnership aims to build large data centres with powerful computer chips to support AI development.
While OpenAI's first Stargate campus in the US, located in Abilene, Texas, is expected to reach 1.2 gigawatts, the Abu Dhabi project would more than quadruple that capacity.
This development highlights the growing AI ties between the US and the UAE, which have built their relationship over the years.
That said, the partnership between OpenAI and G42 has raised concerns among US lawmakers due to G42's ties to blacklisted entities, including Huawei and Beijing Genomics Institute.
In response to these concerns, G42's CEO stated that the company has divested its China investments and is shifting its strategy.
