Threads introduces ‘spoiler tag’ feature to enhance pop culture conversations
In a significant development, the Meta-owned microblogging platform, Threads, is testing a new spoiler text feature aimed at making conversations around movies, TV shows, and books more considerate and engaging.
The company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed the update in a recent post, noting that the feature is part of Threads’ continued effort to keep safe, open, and spoiler-free discussions.
Notably, spoiler text allows users to hide specific words, sentences, or images within a post.
These hidden elements appear blurred or grayed out and are only revealed if a reader chooses to tap on them.
While often used to avoid revealing critical plot points, the feature could also help users share content that might be unsettling to some, such as minor injuries or sensitive personal updates, without violating platform guidelines.
The feature is a thoughtful quality-of-life upgrade, especially given Threads’ growing presence among pop culture enthusiasts.
The company noted that popular series like "The Last of Us" and "The White Lotus" regularly trended on Threads during their seasons, reflecting a vibrant community eager to share reactions while avoiding spoilers for others.
Currently, the feature is in limited testing. Users with access can apply the spoiler tag by selecting and highlighting specific text or media within a post, and then choosing the “mark spoiler” option from the menu.
