Threads’ new ‘DMs’ feature faces backlash from users

Meta has finally rolled out the direct messaging (DMs) feature on Instagram Threads earlier this week, calling it the platform’s “most requested feature.”

However, almost immediately, a wave of critical posts appeared, largely from women who say the new inbox opens the door to harassment, spam, and unwanted outreach, and offers no way to disable it.

Until now, Threads distinguished itself from X (formerly Twitter), Bluesky, Mastodon, and other text centric networks by omitting DMs entirely.

“I don’t want to receive DMs. How do I shut this thing off? I ask on behalf of all women,” one user wrote under Instagram chief Adam Mosseri’s announcement.

Another wrote, “Congrats on adding a feature only stalkers were interested in.” A circulating poll with thousands of votes showed an overwhelming preference to skip messaging altogether.

By design, only accounts you follow can initiate a conversation. Unfollowing someone removes their access; a full block eliminates contact across both Threads and Instagram.

Critics have argued that those safeguards fall short: harassment can come from people you once followed, and incessant bot or spam attempts could still crowd the inbox.

Meta has not indicated plans for an opt out toggle, leaving detractors feeling captive to a service they previously enjoyed, specifically because it lacked private messaging.

Whether the company adds granular controls or doubles down on its current design could determine if reluctant users stay or migrate to platforms that still privilege a DM free experience.
