Roblox introduces new age verification features for teens

Roblox has rolled out a series of new safety measures aimed specifically at users between the ages of 13 and 18.

The updates include a new feature called “Trusted Connections,” an age estimation system, improved privacy tools, and enhanced visibility for parents into their teens’ online activity.

The platform, which has faced increasing scrutiny over its handling of child safety, especially after reports surfaced of minors encountering harmful content and inappropriate interactions, is making changes to address those concerns.

In April, Florida’s Attorney General subpoenaed Roblox over safety issues involving minors, intensifying pressure on the company to improve protections.

One of the key changes is the renaming of “Friends” to “Connections,” with the introduction of “Trusted Connections” that allow verified teens to engage in unfiltered chat and voice conversations with individuals they know.

Roblox noted that this system is designed to keep teens on the platform, where content can be moderated, instead of moving to less secure apps.

To access these features, users must undergo a new age estimation process. This involves submitting a selfie video that the system uses to estimate the user’s age.

If the system determines with high confidence that the user is at least 13, they will unlock the Trusted Connections feature.

If age cannot be verified confidently, users can still confirm their age with an official ID.

Roblox has also reassured parents that conversations between Trusted Connections will be actively monitored for signs of severe harm, such as grooming, and that parents will be able to view their teen’s trusted connections.
