James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios and director of the new Superman movie, has revealed that ex-Superman Henry Cavill's exit from the role  was handled badly.

In a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 58-year-old shared that Cavill had been misled by Warner Bros and was told he would return as Superman.

But when James officially took over the role of DC’s creative director, he had to break the news to Cavill that this wasn’t the case.

“It was terrible. The day our deal was finalized, the studio announced Henry was back,” Gunn recalled. “But we knew the plan was to reboot Superman. It was really unfair to him. A total bummer.”

Gunn praised Cavill’s mature reaction, saying, “He took it like an absolute gentleman. He just asked that he be allowed to share the news himself. I said, ‘That’s a class act.’”

He added that he “would love to put” Cavill in a future DC film, disclosing: “I talked to him about it on that day.”

The 42-year-old actor played the amazing superhero role in Man of Steel, 2013, to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, 2021.

The role is now handed over to David Corenswet as the new Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan was cast  Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.
