From Justin Bieber to Bella Hadid: Stars who have opened up about living with Lyme disease

According to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately 476, 000 Americans are diagnosed and treated for Lyme disease annually.

Symptoms can include a rash and flu-like signs, with some people going on to experience arthritis, facial palsy, pain, irregular heartbeats and often worsening symptoms.

However, in recent years, several Hollywood celebrities have been transparent about their struggle with Lyme disease, helping to create awareness.

Amy Schumer

In September 2020, Amy Schumer shared on Instagram that she had had Lyme disease for years.

"Anyone get LYME this summer? I got it and I'm on doxycycline," Amy wrote, adding, "I have maybe had it for years. Any advice? Can you have a glass of wine or 2 on it?"

“I know to stay out of the sun.I’m also taking these herbs from cape cod called lyme-2. I also want to say that I feel good and am excited to get rid of it,” she continued, asking followers to share any helpful advice.

Justin Bieber

In January 2020, the Sorry crooner shared on his Instagram that it had been a “rough couple of years" battling the disease.

Justin further revealed that for a long time, people assumed that he was “on meth” but failed to realise that it was actually Lyme disease that made him look that way.

He also wrote that he had been struggling with “a serious case of chronic mono,” which affected his skin, brain function, energy, and overall health.

Avril Lavigne

The Complicated hitmaker opened up about her struggle with Lyme disease in a June 2015 interview, disclosing that she was bedridden in October 2014.

Avril referred to it as the “worst time” in her life after doctors misdiagnosed her with chronic fatigue syndrome and depression.

She also told Billboard in October 2018, that her symptoms progressively worsened in 2014, and she had to call off some shows on her tour.

Bella Hadid

The supermodel’s mother, Yolanda Hadid, shared in 2015 that her younger daughter had Lyme disease too, just like her.

A year later, Bella shared how hard it was to get out of bed and to do what she is passionate about.

However, on August 6, 2023, she shared on her Instagram account that she is “finally healthy.”

The model went on to say that she has so much gratitude after struggling with it for half of her life.
