Anthropic, one of the world’s fastest-growing artificial intelligence (AI) startups, has raised billions and positioned itself as a leader in the race for advanced AI.

The AI startup’s CEO, Dario Amodei, has now issued a sobering warning that has left policymakers, businesses, and workers stunned.

Speaking at the Axios AI+ DC Summit, Amodei cautioned that the impact of AI on jobs might be far more disruptive than many expected.

Anthropic CEO’s announcement

Amodei revealed that within the next five years, AI could eliminate up to half of all entry-level white-collar jobs in sectors such as law, finance, and consulting.

He predicted unemployment rates could spike to 10–20%, a level not seen in decades.

While stressing that AI also brings opportunities, he admitted there is a 25% chance things could go “really, really badly.”

“We felt there was a need to warn the world about it and to speak honestly,” Amodei stated.

Is AI really replacing jobs?

Anthropic’s own data supports these warnings. Businesses using its flagship AI chatbot, Claude, are leaning toward automation rather than collaboration, replacing human tasks with AI at a rapid pace.

Moreover, Amodei’s cofounder and Anthropic’s head of policy, Jack Clark, echoed the concerns, saying the “scale of disruption” in the coming years demands serious policy action.

While companies hail efficiency gains, critics warn that the technology is already hollowing out career paths for young professionals.

How is this going to affect us?

If current trends continue, the divide between those who benefit from AI and those who lose livelihoods could widen dramatically.

Beyond job losses, Amodei stressed the need for government intervention to support displaced workers and rethink economic safety nets.

With Anthropic now valued at $183 billion and its chatbot Claude boasting over 30 million monthly active users, the technology is already embedded in workplaces worldwide.
