Jane Goodall in memoriam: Looking back on pioneering anthropologist’s life through camera
Hollywood leads the tributes for Dame Jane Goodall

English zoologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall, memorable for her extensive work with primates, has breathed her last at 91 years of age.
The Jane Goodall Institute announced the demise of their founder, who ostensibly went out on a high note, doing what she loved the most — the revered animal welfare advocate was on a speaking tour in California, where she passed away from natural causes.
“Dr. Goodall’s discoveries as an ethologist revolutionized science, and she was a tireless advocate for the protection and restoration of our natural world,” the institute eulogised its founder via Instagram.
Goodall in Film
A legend of her discipline, Jane Goodall was partly inspired to pursue a career in environmental conservation and animal care when she read books like The Story of Doctor Dolittle and Tarzan — texts which were famously adapted on screen.
Perhaps Dame Goodall’s early cinematic connections led her to develop a persona charismatic enough to become the face of her field and shepherd the movement from the forefront.
Taking over the leadership of her cause as she did, the late conservationist starred in a slew of documentary films to further it.
Here are some of them:
Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees (1965) — starring Jane Goodall and narrated by Orson Welles.
Jane (2017) — a biographical documentary film produced by National Geographic Studios.
Jane Goodall: Reasons for Hope (2023) — Canadian documentary film and featuring conversation with Jane Goodall.
Moreover, the famed anthropologist revealed in 2024 that a fictional movie based on her life is in the works.
“They’re making a film about me with an actress. I’ve seen the first draft of the script and made a lot of comments,” she told Deadline.
Tributes
Since the announcement of her death, an outpouring of admiration and tributes has been recorded from all over the world.
