Prince William may have held the sword, but it turns out he is just as much a fan of Gary Oldman as the rest of us.

The Oscar winning actor, was officially knighted during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle on September, 30 and the memorable moment was filled with humor, and heartfelt reflections.

Here are the some of the standout moments from the royal ceremony:

1. Prince William knighted Gary Oldman in a historic ceremony

Oldman knelt before the Prince of Wales, who tapped the actor’s shoulders with a sword, formally bestowing the honour.

Oldman was recognised for his services to drama in King Charles’ Birthday Honours list.

2. The Prince is a 'Slow Horses' fan

Oldman revealed that William chatted about Apple TV’s hit spy drama Slow Horses, where Oldman plays a disheveled MI5 veteran.

According to The Standard, William joked, “I just want to give you a good wash.”

Oldman quipped back with a smile, “Well, I think I’ve scrubbed up okay today.”

3. William mentioned Oldman’s iconic roles

It wasn’t just Slow Horses; the prince also name-dropped Oldman’s performances in The Fifth Element and his Oscar-winning role as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. The actor confirmed, “He’s a fan.”

4. Oldman called the knighthood “very emotional”

The actor admitted the moment surpassed even Hollywood’s biggest prize. “I think I feel very honoured, very humbled and flattered, I think in equal measure,” Oldman said, adding, “I thought the Oscar was a big deal. No disrespect to the academy, but it sort of pales in comparison to this. It’s just been wonderful.”

5. William said he was glad to be the one presenting the honour

Oldman shared that William told him he was “very happy that I was here today and that it was him that had the opportunity to present me with [the honour].”

6. The ceremony honoured more than one star

Alongside Oldman, Prince William also recognized BAFTA-winning actress Samantha Morton and Lioness soccer player Rachel Daly. Back in June, he knighted England manager Gareth Southgate, a highlight for the royal’s soccer-loving children.

William previously admitted to The Sun that watching matches with his kids comes with superstitions, “If we’re not doing very well, I start moving round the house quite quickly, and I put the children in different positions hoping that’s going to change our luck.”
