Sam Altman announces major GPT-5 update, new safeguards for OpenAI’s Sora
OpenAI has rolled out a major update to its GPT-5 Instant model

OpenAI has rolled out a major update to its cutting-edge GPT-5 Instant model, designed to make ChatGPT faster and more empathetic during sensitive conversations.
Announced by CEO Sam Altman, the update ensures that emotionally charged or delicate exchanges will now be routed through GPT-5 Instant, which is optimised to respond with both speed and compassion.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI explained the reason behind the change: “We’re updating GPT-5 Instant to better recognize and support people in moments of distress."
"Sensitive parts of conversations will now route to GPT-5 Instant to quickly provide even more helpful responses. ChatGPT will continue to tell users what model is active when asked. Starting to roll out to ChatGPT users today,” the post reads.
Altman described these measures as part of OpenAI’s broader mission to develop technology that is not only powerful and creative but also “responsible, empathetic, and respectful of human expression.”
The rollout has already begun, bringing immediate improvements for users who rely on ChatGPT not only for professional tasks but also for emotional guidance and reassurance.
Alongside the GPT-5 update, Altman also revealed new safeguards for Sora, OpenAI’s experimental video-generation platform.
Responding to feedback from creators, the upcoming changes will expand Sora’s opt-in system, allowing artists to restrict or block certain uses of their characters and creative assets.
