Diddy gets 50 months in prison: What happened inside the courtroom

Sean “Diddy” Combs has officially received his sentence after being convicted on two prostitution related charges earlier this year.

The high profile case has drawn nationwide attention, and proceedings offered a glimpse into both the legal consequences and personal fallout of the disgraced mogul’s actions.

Here are some of the insights:

1. Combs sentenced to 50 months, will serve 36

Judge Arun Subramanian handed Combs a 50 month prison sentence, however, with credit for time served, the 55 year old will spend 36 months three years behind bars.

He will also face five years of supervised release and the maximum fine allowable of $500,000.

2. Courtroom apology

Before the sentence was delivered, Combs addressed the court and his loved ones. With his head lowered he admitted, “My behavior was disgusting, shameful and sick. My children deserve better, and I failed my mother as a son.”

3. Judge rejects “freak-off” narrative

Judge Subramanian firmly rejected attempts to downplay the choreographed sex parties Combs orchestrated.

“These were not intimate consensual experiences or just a ‘sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll’ story,” he said, stressing that a lengthy sentence was necessary to show “that exploitation and violence against women is met with real accountability.”

4. Prosecutors push for harsher penalty

Assistant U.S. Attorney Christy Slavik argued that Combs’ attitude showed arrogance.

“His respect for the law is just lip service,” she told the court, pointing out that Combs had already booked speaking engagements anticipating release, adding, “That is the height of hubris, your honour.”

Prosecutors had urged an 11 year sentence, calling him “unrepentant.”

5. The defense shows softer side

Combs’ attorneys presented a 12 minute video montage, featuring the rapper giving motivational talks to children and running a marathon to raise money for education.

The clip visibly touched Combs and he became emotional during the presentation.

6. Convictions and acquittals

In July, Combs was convicted on transportation to engage in prostitution charges but innocent of more serious allegations, which include sex trafficking and racketeering.

His legal team had asked for a sentence of not more than 14 months.
