Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has made another bold forecast about humanity’s future, this time, envisioning millions of people living beyond Earth in the coming decades.

During a rare public appearance at the Italian Tech Week in Turin, Bezos told John Elkann of Italy’s Agnelli family that he expects “millions of people to be living and working in space within the next couple of decades,” according to the Financial Times.

The billionaire, who also founded the space exploration company Blue Origin, said this shift will happen “mostly because people will want to,” adding that robots will perform the heavy labour while large AI-powered data centres orbit Earth.

Bezos’s vision seems to echo that of rival space entrepreneur Elon Musk, who has long claimed that humans could establish a colony of one million people on Mars by 2050.

While Musk’s goal centres on interplanetary living, Bezos imagines massive space habitats closer to Earth.

The Amazon founder also commented on the global surge in artificial intelligence investment, calling it a “good kind of bubble” because it is “industrial” rather than “financial.”

“There has never been a better time to be excited about the future,” Bezos said, expressing optimism even as many remain skeptical about the pace of such space-bound dreams.
