Spotify’s longtime CEO and founder, Daniel Ek, has announced he is stepping down from his role, following months of mounting controversy and criticism from artists over his defense industry ties.

Ek’s investment firm, Prima Materia, has recently funneled money into Helsing, a German defense technology company developing AI tools for warfare.

The move angered many musicians, including Massive Attack, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Deerhoof, and Hotline TNT, who removed their music from the platform in protest.

While neither Ek nor Spotify cited the backlash as the reason for his departure, the timing has drawn speculation.

Earlier this week, Spotify named Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström as co-CEOs. However, Ek will remain executive chairman, maintaining significant control over the company’s strategic direction.

In his announcement, Ek clarified that Söderström and Norström would “continue to report to me,” suggesting his influence will remain strong despite relinquishing the CEO title.

Spotify’s leadership shake-up comes at a tense moment for the streaming giant, already facing artist boycotts over low payouts and exclusive podcast deals.
