Secret measures which kept Princess Diana’s royal life afloat — from the inside
How Princess Diana’s masterful management kept her sane among royalty

On her way to becoming a princess, a barely 20-year-old Lady Diana Spencer gave way to the excruciating nerves of her wedding day and messed up her to-be husband’s name while reciting her marital vows — “Philip Charles”, the young bride mistakenly fumbled, instead of Charles Philip.
Later describing her feeling on the day as “lamb to the slaughter”, the former Princess of Wales soon discovered how her outwardly fairytale wedding’s spirit would come to haunt the remainder of her years as part of the royal family.
Nevertheless, as history would record, Diana eventually enchanted the world with her natural charm and sophisticated ease — evidently however, those were not enough for everyone.
To keep the cracks in her marriage — and sanity — from becoming common display, Princess Diana espoused a few secret actions which guaranteed some normalcy and maintained the well necessary facade.
Food and company
Amid the royal family’s preferences — and duty — toward traditional practices which didn’t even spare their culinary habits, Diana sought comfort in the company of staffers and television.
Former royal chef, and the Princess’ personal one, Darren McGrady revealed that Diana would deliberately disregard royal decorum and eat in the kitchen, among the staff there.
While Edith Conn, who was president of the Manchester branch of British Red Cross when she met Diana, later recalled, “She was so approachable because she was so relaxed. When someone is relaxed, you relax with them, and it just made the whole experience better.”
As for the Princess’ plans after the event? “I’m going home tonight. I’m having beans on toast and watching ‘EastEnders’!”
Tabloid vigilance
Diana was always aware, perhaps painfully so, that she was as much a target for the press as she was adored among the public.
Unable to stop the predatory instincts which sold hordes of newspaper copies at the behest of her reputation, King Charles’ former wife kept a close eye at what was being written about her at the very least.
“She wasn’t allowed to see the tabloid newspapers. One of the hairdressers smuggled them in...Did I say that? They were smuggled in, but it’s not to do with me,” Richard Dalton, former royal hairdresser, once told PEOPLE.
The secret course of action was further described by Dalton in the words, “Nobody questioned it because nobody knew.”
Secret will
Even in death, Princess Diana resolved to hidden maneuvers — guided by her secret will.
National Examiner reported the discovery of the document, long considered lost, “hidden inside a forgotten desk drawer in one of her favorite rooms at Kensington Place.”
Choosing to keep the will a secret because she “knew she was being watched”, per a royal insider, the final deed poignantly addressed her two sons and instructed them to "protect each other”, while her ex-husband was not welcome to her funeral — a wish that was undiscovered at the time and thusly disregarded.
“She didn’t want Charles crying over her. He didn’t,” a source revealed.
