John Ternus poised to take over Apple: 5 things to know about the man who could replace Tim Cook

As Apple CEO Tim Cook nears his 65th birthday on November 1, speculation is mounting that the tech visionary could soon pass the torch.

After nearly 14 years at the company, Cook has transformed Apple into a $3 trillion powerhouse, expanding its reach beyond iPhones and Macs into a vast ecosystem of services including Apple Music, Apple Pay, and Apple TV+.

However, in  asurprising turn of events, according to a new Bloomberg report, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, has emerged as the leading internal candidate to succeed him.

While other names, including Craig Federighi, Senior VP of Software Engineering, Greg Joswiak, Senior VP of Worldwide Marketing, and Jeff Williams, former Chief Operating Officer are being considered, analysts note that Ternus stands out for his deep product knowledge and long tenure with the company.

Here are 5 mind-blowing facts about Ternus you need to know.

1. The same age Cook was when he became CEO

At 50 years old, Ternus is notably the same age Cook was when he succeeded Steve Jobs in 2011, a symbolic passing of the torch that aligns with Apple’s preference for seasoned, steady leadership.

2. A trained engineer with deep Apple roots

Ternus earned his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania and joined Apple in 2001.

Over two decades, he has shaped nearly every major product line, overseeing the design of iPhones, iPads, and AirPods, as well as leading the groundbreaking Mac transition to Apple Silicon.

3. A champion in the pool

Before his tech career, Ternus was a competitive swimmer at his college, winning events like the 50-meter freestyle and 200-meter medley.

His athletic discipline, teammates say, reflects the same focus he brings to Apple’s product teams.

4. Rising through the ranks

In 2020, he took charge of iPhone hardware engineering, succeeding Dan Riccio.

By 2021, Ternus was promoted to Senior Vice President, cementing his place on Apple’s elite executive team.

5. Keeps a low public profile

Despite his growing prominence, Ternus keeps a low public profile, with no active social media presence.

But within Apple, he’s known as a thoughtful and detail-driven leader.
