Timothée Chalamet’s ‘Marty Supreme’ earns buzz after premiere reactions

Timothée Chalamet’s latest film, Marty Supreme, made a surprise splash at the New York Film Festival, drawing overwhelming praise and igniting early Oscar buzz. Directed solo by Josh Safdie, the gritty drama follows a manic New York ping-pong hustler, Marty Mauser played with ferocious energy by Chalamet.

Reactions after premere

Reactions from the first screening were electric. One attendee wrote, “Timothée Chalamet, speaking a mile a minute with a hyperactive mind and unshakeable confidence, throws himself into the role with total commitment, emotionally and physically, crescendoing in a climactic moment that had the audience standing on their feet and cheering.”

A career-defining turn?

Many early viewers called it the actor’s finest performance to date. “Career-best performance. He was born to play this guy,” one critic declared. 

Others said the film was “the best of the year” and praised Safdie’s vision as “his best film yet.”

While comparisons to Safdie’s previous work especially Uncut Gems were inevitable, many felt Marty Supreme carried a broader emotional core and an even more chaotic energy. 

One viewer summarized the mood, calling it “a heart attack of a movie.”

Raw filmmaking, real emotion

The film’s intense authenticity may be rooted in how close to the edge it was made. After the screening, Safdie admitted, “I finished it at 2 a.m. yesterday,” adding that he was checking sound during the film’s own sound check.

The director also shared a heartfelt embrace with Chalamet during the Q&A. The Dune star, visibly moved, shouted, “This is f---ing awesome, dude,” reflecting on returning to the city where he once dreamed of a career in film.

Chalamet also revealed he had trained for years for the role, even fitting a ping-pong table into small apartments during other film shoots. “This is who I was before I had a career,” he said, hinting at a deep personal connection to Marty.

A contender emerges

With awards season fast approaching, Marty Supreme looks poised to become a major player. Critics, fans, and industry insiders alike are already buzzing and whether it becomes a classic remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Chalamet’s Marty Mauser has arrived, and he’s not going unnoticed.
