Beyond ChatGPT: Inside OpenAI’s upcoming game-changing plans

OpenAI, the company that revolutionised artificial intelligence (AI) with ChatGPT, is preparing for an even bolder future.

Under the leadership of Sam Altman, OpenAI is expanding its ambitions far beyond chatbots, into infrastructure, media, and digital ecosystems that could redefine how technology integrates into daily life.

At its recent developer event in San Francisco, the company unveiled plans that signal a new era for AI.

1. Building the next generation of the AI-powered web

OpenAI aims to make ChatGPT the centre of online activity, a platform where users can do everything from booking flights to creating Spotify playlists without leaving the chat window.

This integration with third-party apps is designed to transform ChatGPT from a tool into a universal digital assistant, much like how iOS or Android function as ecosystems.

2. Investing billions in AI data centres

To fuel this expansion, OpenAI is investing billions of dollars in global data centres.

Through partnerships with Oracle, Nvidia, and AMD, the company plans to build massive infrastructure projects like Stargate, a $500 billion initiative developing AI supercomputing facilities in Texas and beyond.

3. Sora — the frontier in AI video generation

OpenAI’s new social video app, Sora, reached one million downloads in just five days.

Designed to generate hyper-realistic short videos from text prompts, it marks OpenAI’s move into digital entertainment, potentially rivaling platforms like TikTok and YouTube in content creation.

4. Expanding partnerships with global tech giants

Recent collaborations with AMD, Figma, Expedia, and HubSpot reveal OpenAI’s strategy to embed AI across industries, from design and travel to marketing and customer service.

Each integration extends OpenAI’s presence beyond software into core business operations.

5. Building an AI-powered economy

Altman has stated that OpenAI’s long-term goal is to “rebuild the internet around intelligence.”

With plans to spend trillions on computing infrastructure, OpenAI hopes to lead an AI-driven economic transformation.
