An enduring presence in the lives of youth everywhere, MTV is set to halt operations globally, with the exception of the United States.

The end of an era was confirmed by Paramount Global, the network’s parent company, following more than four decades of successful programming.

According to Euronews, the latest development will affect five channels: MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live.

“They’ll first go down in the UK and Ireland, before switching off in France, Germany, Austria, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Australia and Brazil,” the outlet further reported.

MTV’s cut down reportedly involves massive plans for budget scaling, as Paramount is set to merge with Skydance Media this year. While “fierce competition” from streaming and social media is also speculated to be a factor.

Though the BBC reported that the MTV brand will “continue to have a presence on social media and Paramount’s streaming service Paramount+.”

For the record, MTV soared in the 1980s — following its launch in 1981, the network soon became a mainstay, courtesy of their “on demand” music video segment, while moments like the globally televised premiere of Michael Jackson’s Thriller and the introduction of MTV Video Music Awards in 1984 cemented its untouchable status in pop culture.
