King Charles’ efforts towards environmental sustainability may be called into question as the monarch’s Crown Estate is in danger of being sued by Greenpeace over ecological mismanagement.

The independent organisation has accused the King’s public estate of monopolising and profiting from the sales of offshore properties for wind farm construction.

These allegations stem from the Crown Estate’s control over the development of wind power plants along the country’s shores.

The Guardian further reported that the British sovereign’s corporation “has benefited from the huge growth in the industry” while also “commanding hefty option fees” from the developers of renewable energy “to secure areas of the seabed to build their windfarms.”

Greenpeace’s co-executive director, Will McCallum stated, “We should leave no stone unturned in looking for solutions to lower energy bills that are causing misery to millions of households.”

The executive officer further demanded that the Crown “manage the seabed in the interest of the nation and the common good, not as an asset to be milked for profit and outrageous bonuses.”

While a spokesperson for King Charles’ Crown Estate maintained that “Greenpeace has misunderstood” their legal and financial responsibilities. “Option fees are not fixed by the Crown Estate. They are set by the developers through open, competitive auctions and reflect market appetite at the time.”
