Apple fans calling M5 chip launch a ‘reheated M4’: Here’s why

Apple officially unveiled its long-awaited M5 chipset earlier this week, calling it the next big leap in AI performance for Apple Silicon.

Built on third-generation 3-nanometer technology, the chip features a 10-core GPU architecture with a Neural Accelerator in each core, promising faster computing, improved graphics, and better AI efficiency.

The M5 will power the iPad Pro, Vision Pro, and entry-level MacBook Pro, setting the stage for Apple’s next generation of devices.

However, despite Apple’s bold claims, many loyal fans seem underwhelmed, calling the new chip a “reheated M4” rather than a true innovation.

Fans' reaction to the M5 chip

On social media, tech enthusiasts expressed frustration, saying Apple’s latest release feels like a rushed, incremental upgrade.

Popular reviewer Marques Brownlee’s post about the M5 became a hub for unimpressed reactions. “Does anybody actually need this? Wasn’t M4 enough?” one user wrote.

Another joked, “At this rate, the MacBook will reach sentience before Siri does.”

Others questioned Apple’s motives, saying, “Why does an iPad need an M5 chip when Apple limits its software so much?”

Why fans are unhappy

Lack of major design changes

The M5 MacBook Pro retains the same design as previous models, with no new ports, displays, or chassis updates. Even Thunderbolt 5 support remains missing from base models.

Disappointing performance gains

Independent benchmarks show only a 10–15% CPU boost over the M4, with negligible GPU or battery improvements.

Many feel the M5 doesn’t justify an upgrade, especially with the M4 having launched just months ago.

Unimpressive battery life

Despite using a more efficient 3nm process, the battery life in the M5 MacBook Pro is reportedly the same as the M4 model.

Overhyped AI focus

Apple’s biggest push was AI acceleratio but fans argue most users won’t notice any real-world benefits yet.

Too soon, too similar

Moreover, with the M4 debuting in 2024, many believe the M5 was released too quickly, a strategic refresh rather than a revolution.
