But behind the hype of its iconic fashion shows and its global reputation as the world’s most recognizable lingerie brand lies a story that began humbly in 1977, with a man named Roy Raymond and a simple idea born out of embarrassment.

Roy Raymond’s vision

Raymond was a graduate student at Stanford when he felt awkward buying lingerie for his wife in a department store.

To help men shop comfortably for intimate wear, he borrowed $80,000 and opened the first Victoria’s Secret store at the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, California.

The name honors Queen Victoria, a symbol of elegance, while the “secret” refers to the sensuality hidden beneath the clothing.

From local boutique to billion-dollar brand

The concept was a hit. Within five years, the brand grew into a small but successful chain, catching the eye of retail magnate Les Wexner, who bought it in 1982 for $1 million.

Wexner reimagined Victoria’s Secret not just for men, but for women, selling empowerment wrapped in lace and silk.

By the early ’90s, the company had over 350 stores, annual sales of $1 billion, and a new marketing phenomenon: The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

The rise of the angels

The fall

But as trends evolved, the brand faced criticism for its lack of inclusivity and outdated ideals. By the late 2010s, its once-unshakable empire began to crumble amid controversies surrounding its leadership and growing competition from inclusive, body-positive brands.

A new era begins

Since 2021, under new management, Victoria’s Secret has redefined its message, embracing diversity, real beauty, and authenticity.

Collaborations with icons like Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Naomi Osaka have helped reposition the brand for modern women.
