Elon Musk warns ‘Earth only has 10% of its life left’ in his X post
Elon Musk has once again sparked a global conversation about humanity’s future

Elon Musk has once again sparked a global conversation about humanity’s future, this time by warning that Earth has already lived through 90% of its lifespan and could soon become uninhabitable.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO recently reshared an old interview clip on X (formerly Twitter), reigniting his long-standing argument that life beyond Earth isn’t just an ambition, it’s a necessity.
“If Earth has been around for 4.5 billion years, then it only has about 10% more life in it before it gets so hot that life is impossible,” Musk said in the clip.
Musk explained that the planet’s fate is ultimately tied to the sun, which is slowly expanding and will one day incinerate everything on Earth.
He believes humanity’s survival depends on becoming a multi-planetary species, with Mars serving as a “backup drive” for life itself.
“It’s not about planting flags or taking photos on Mars,” Musk said. “It’s about creating a self-sustaining city that can survive without help from Earth."
"If resupply ships stop coming for any reason — war, collapse, or catastrophe — and Mars can’t sustain itself, then we’ve failed to secure life insurance for humanity.”
His remarks, equal parts scientific and philosophical, have reignited debate online, with some calling him a “visionary realist,” and others dismissing the post as “doomsday PR.”
