Amazon is reportedly planning to replace more than 600,000 US workers with AI-powered robots by 2033,

Citing leaked internal documents, The New York Times reported that the tech giant’s long-term automation strategy aims to cut costs while doubling its product output, marking one of the most aggressive workforce transitions in corporate history.

The documents suggested that Amazon’s robotics division is targeting the automation of 75% of its operations, with around 160,000 warehouse and delivery roles expected to disappear by 2027 alone.

These changes could save the company an estimated $12.6 billion between 2025 and 2027, translating to roughly 30 cents saved on every item handled and shipped.

However, the report also reveals that Amazon is preparing for backlash over potential mass job losses.

The company has reportedly discussed softening its public messaging, avoiding terms like “AI” or “automation”and instead using friendlier phrases such as “advanced technology” or “cobots” (collaborative robots).

In response, Amazon told The New York Times that the leaked materials were “incomplete” and didn’t reflect its overall hiring or automation strategy.

It is worth noting that the development came just a day after the Amazon Web Services (AWS) massive outage that disrupted major platforms including Reddit, Snapchat, Alexa, Fortnite, Roblox, and even Amazon’s own systems.
