ChatGPT under fire as users claim it causes psychological harm
Several users in US have filed complaints with FTC against OpenAI’s ChatGPT

Several users in the United States have reportedly filed complaints with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), claiming that OpenAI’s AI chatbot, ChatGPT, has caused them psychological distress, including delusions, paranoia, and emotional breakdowns.
According to a report by Wired, at least seven individuals have lodged formal complaints against Sam Altman's company since November 2022, alleging that prolonged use of ChatGPT led to severe mental and emotional disturbances.
One user claimed that extended conversations with the chatbot resulted in “a real, unfolding spiritual and legal crisis,” while another accused ChatGPT of using “emotionally manipulative” language that simulated friendship and trust.
Moreover, some users said the AI chatbot’s responses blurred the line between reality and illusion.
One person described experiencing “cognitive hallucinations” after ChatGPT reassured them that they were not hallucinating, despite their confusion.
Another user wrote in desperation to the FTC, saying, “I’m struggling. Please help me. I feel very alone.”
Most complainants told the FTC they reached out because they were unable to contact OpenAI directly.
They urged regulators to investigate the company and require stronger mental health safeguards within AI systems.
The complaints come at a time when global investment in artificial intelligence (AI) is soaring, and the technology’s psychological impact is under growing scrutiny.
Notably, this is not the first time OpenAI has faced such a controversy.
Earlier this year, a teenager’s parents accused ChatGPT of playing a role in their child’s death, sparking urgent discussions about whether AI tools need stricter emotional and ethical boundaries.
