OpenAI has announced a major push into the Indian market, offering its ChatGPT Go plan free for one year to all users in the country who sign up during a limited promotional window starting November 4.

The company did not specify how long it would remain available. Current ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will also receive the same one-year free access, OpenAI confirmed.

Priced under $5 per month, ChatGPT Go was first introduced in India in August as OpenAI’s most affordable subscription tier.

The plan later expanded to Indonesia and, earlier this month, to 16 more countries across Asia.

Home to over 700 million smartphone users and a billion internet subscribers, India has emerged as one of OpenAI’s fastest-growing markets.

The company opened its New Delhi office in August and is actively building a local team to strengthen operations.

Despite India being OpenAI’s second-largest market after the US, monetising ChatGPT subscriptions has been a challenge.

According to Appfigures data, ChatGPT recorded over 29 million downloads in India within 90 days before August but generated only $3.6 million in in-app purchases during that period.

Notably, ChatGPT Go provides users with ten times more usage than the free tier for text generation, image creation, and file uploads, along with improved memory for personalised interactions.

“Since launching ChatGPT Go in India, the creativity from our users has been inspiring,” said OpenAI’s vice president and head of ChatGPT, Nick Turley.
