Is Andrew’s former title on the verge of disappearance? Royal expert weighs in

Andrew was bestowed the Dukedom of York by Queen Elizabeth on his wedding day in 1986, while his bride, Sarah Ferguson, became the Duchess of York — titles both of them have since lost.

However, the title itself long preceded Andrew’s time and has historically been booked for a British monarch’s second son to inherit. Now, a royal expert has claimed that it will likely “disappear” from the pages of history for the decades to come.

Christopher Wilson — journalist, author, and expert on all things royal — wrote in his latest column for the Daily Mail that Andrew has “splattered mud all over a noble 600 year old title and ruined it for future generations.”

“The name Duke of York, first granted in 1385, has traditionally been reserved for the second son of the king. Now it will disappear, maybe for good,” he added.

As things stand, Prince Louis — the youngest son of Prince William — would have inherited the title in the future.

“But now the disgraced peerage will be stuck in a drawer, along with other royal dukedoms that have been sullied by their holder over the centuries,” Wilson proposed.

The royal biographer further made a pointed mention of the York name still living on “for the time being” with Andrew’s daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, both of whom are known as the Princesses of York. Though he has cautioned that there is no guarantee that it will forever remain so “when Prince William becomes king.”
