'Vape!' revives ‘Grease’ with a bold and modern spin
‘Vape!’ brings a modern feminist twist to the timeless ‘Grease’ classic
Vape! The Grease Parody, an off-Broadway production running at Theater 555 on West 42nd Street until Jan. 4, reimagines the beloved 1950s high school musical for today’s woke world.
The show humorously highlights aspects of the 1978 classic “that did not age so well,” said Lara Strong, who plays Sandy.
“It brought out so many of the extremes that we see in the movie and reminded me of how ridiculous ‘Grease’ really is,” added Scott Silagy, who plays Danny, the greaser heartthrob originally portrayed by John Travolta.
In this modern version, the Pink Ladies become the Pink Squad, cigarettes are swapped for vape pens, and Greased Lightnin’ is replaced by a Prius. Danny and Kenickie are now sexually fluid.
“Teens have traded their cigs for vape pens, hot rods for hybrids, and making out too well, making out,” joked director Jack Plotnick.
The musical also rewrites the film’s ending. “I’ve decided that Danny just doesn’t appreciate me for who I am,” Sandy says, rejecting her bad-girl transformation.
“Her completely changing herself for a man highlights the film being a product of its time,” Strong added.
The show mocks the original cast’s ages, with the line, “This school is stupid and the guys are gross but we’ve been here so long, our veins are varicose.”
Modern humour continues as Rizzo blames menopause for her symptoms, Marty boasts 500 Tinder dates and an OnlyFans, and Sandy’s solo becomes “Hopelessly Gaslighted by You.”
