Yes, it's hard to believe, but some notable figures in the entertainment industry have evaded or avoided paying taxes.
Here’s a list of Hollywood celebrities who dodged taxes and became tax evaders:
Shakira
The Hips Don't Lie singer, as per Spanish tax authorities, has been embroiled in a long and costly battle over her tax residency for allegedly failing to pay taxes between 2012 and 2014.
In November 2023, the 48-year-old songstress reached a last-minute settlement to avoid trial over accusations, regarding failing to pay €14.5 million in tax between the same years.
The Waka Waka hitmaker agreed to pay a fine of €7.3 million and accept a suspended three-year prison sentence, stating she did it for the sake of her children.
Wesley Snipes
Snipes was convicted in 2008 on three counts of failing to file to file tax returns from 1999 through 2001.
According to Newsweek, the Blade actor owed $23.5 million and had offered to pay only $842,000 to clear his debt.
He was also sentenced to three years in federal prison and fined $5 million, and he got released in 2013 after serving two and a half years.
Lindsay Lohan
In 2012, Lohan’s bank accounts were seized by the IRS seized in order to repay her $233,904 in unpaid federal taxes.
Later in 2017, the Freakier Friday actress faced a tax lien for $100,710.55, covering the years 2010, 2014, and 2015.
Lindsay Lohan still owes the US government over $100,000 in taxes, according to a recently filed tax lien.
Nicolas Cage
The 61-year-old actor, in 2010, over the course of his career he had paid over $70 million in taxes, but he still owed $14 million to the IRS, according to PEOPLE.
The total debt ballooned to $14 million due to additional liens.
The Longlegs actor's tax troubles began when the IRS filed a multimillion-dollar tax lien for unpaid 2007 taxes, amounting to $6.2 million.
Moreover, Cage blamed his business manager, Samuel Levin, for negligence and fraud, and sued him for $20 million.
Lil Wayne
Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Michael, landed in tax trouble when the IRS filed tax liens against him for unpaid taxes.
The Annihilate hitmaker settled a $7.7 million debt to the IRS in 2012 after the agency had threatened to seize the rapper’s Miami mansion, according to the Daily Mail.
His debt included $3.35 million owed in 2008, $2.25 million in 2009 and additional taxes and fees for unpaid taxes in additional years.
In 2018, the musician revealed to the crowd at a concert in Chicago that Jay-Z helped him with the taxes.
