Sam Altman hits back at Elon Musk amid renewed OpenAI feud
Long-running feud between Elon Musk and Sam Altman has taken a new turn
The long-running feud between Elon Musk and Sam Altman has taken a new turn. The OpenAI CEO has finally hit back after Musk accused him of “stealing a non-profit,” a jab at OpenAI’s shift from a non-profit to a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC).
Responding directly to Musk on X (formerly Twitter), Altman didn’t hold back. “I helped turn the thing you left for dead into what should be the largest non-profit ever,” he wrote.
“You also wanted Tesla to take OpenAI over — no non-profit at all. And you said we had a 0% chance of success. Now you have a great AI company, and so do we. Can’t we all just move on?”
Altman’s post referenced Musk’s early involvement with OpenAI, from which he later distanced himself.
But this latest exchange wasn’t just about company structure, it reignited years of personal tension between two of the most high-profile figures in tech.
The drama began when Altman shared an old email about his cancelled Tesla Roadster order from 2017, claiming he never received a refund.
Musk quickly shot back, saying the refund had been processed “within 24 hours” and accused Altman of lying.
Adding fuel to the fire, Musk later teased Tesla’s upcoming Roadster on The Joe Rogan Experience, calling the upcoming demo “unforgettable — whether it’s good or bad.”
