Elon Musk is facing severe backlash for mocking New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani in a controversial post on X (formerly Twitter).
In a post endorsing former governor Andrew Cuomo, Musk urged voters to support Cuomo over rival candidate Curtis Sliwa. However, his message quickly took an offensive turn.
“Bear in mind that a vote for Curtis is really a vote for Mumdumi or whatever his name is,” Musk wrote.
The post sparked immediate outrage, with many accusing the Tesla CEO of racism and immaturity.
Critics flooded the comments section, calling out Musk for deliberately misspelling Mamdani’s name.
“You can dislike someone’s politics, but mocking their name is a third-rate, middle-school tactic,” wrote Dipti Desai, CEO of Crstl Tech.
Another user posted, “When Elon messes up your name, you know you’re winning, and he’s not happy about it.”
For those uninitiated, Mamdani, a 34-year-old Indian-origin Democratic socialist who recently made headlines for defeating Cuomo in the Democratic primary, is running his campaign on issues such as affordable housing, free public transport, and childcare.
Meanwhile, Cuomo, 67, is now running as an independent, while Republican Curtis Sliwa remains in the race.
