Andrew’s name quietly undergoes further change following old document’s examination
Andrew will now carry the hyphenated last name decreed in his mother’s old declaration
Andrew, the former Duke of York, has been handed a further name switch — he will now carry the last name Mountbatten-Windsor, according to Queen Elizabeth’s declaration to privy council.
Just weeks before Andrew was born on February 19, 1960, the late Queen had modified her family’s name to include her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh’s family name for her children — “My descendants, other than descendants enjoying the style title or attribute of royal highness and the titular dignity of prince or princess, and female descendants who marry and their descendants, shall bear the name of Mountbatten-Windsor,” the declaration dated February 8, 1960 states.
Hence, the change was quietly implemented while The Guardian reported, “Royal sources have now confirmed that Mountbatten-Windsor will indeed use the punctuation mark between his two last names.”
“It is understood the palace has examined the 1960 privy council declaration, which includes a hyphen, and will use one from now on,” the publication further noted.
Though when requested for a clarification over the previous name, a spokesperson for Buckingham Palace simply said, “Andrew Mountbatten Windsor was the name agreed.”
In addition to the latest change, the formal removal of Andrew’s title as a prince was confirmed on November 5.
