Meghan Markle rattles Netflix with key decision in her return to acting
Meghan Markle’s latest business move ‘has been noted’ at Netflix
Meghan Markle is set to mark her return in the acting world with the upcoming release, Close Personal Friends. However, the Duchess of Sussex choosing to make the return with an Amazon project has raised a few eyebrows at Netflix, Meghan’s current media partner.
The As Ever founder’s lucrative deal with Netflix was renewed earlier this year, following which her and Prince Harry were given first-look privileges for their future collaborations with the streamer.
A source, quoted by GB News, said “Everyone in Hollywood is talking about Meghan making her return to acting in an Amazon film rather than a Netflix project.”
The insider further cited Meghan and Harry’s bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey “post Megxit”, which had also left “people all over town are wondering why they didn’t come to Netflix?”
“Of course, Netflix will never say anything remotely critical about them publicly,” the source stated. “But let’s just say – this has been noted.”
Meanwhile, a source from WME — the entertainment agency which represents the Duchess — defended their client by saying, “The Duchess is a smart businesswoman and very much in control of her career and where she sees it going.”
Acknowledging that “people are talking about her connection to Jeff Bezos and the fact she’s chosen to star in an Amazon film”, the agency’s insider further stated that “there are very few big players in town and she has two of them – Netflix and Amazon.”
“She’s a canny businesswoman. Underestimate her at your peril,” the statement from WME concluded.
Meghan Markle recently shot her cameo for Close Personal Friends, the release schedule for which is not yet known. Though a project produced by her Archewell Productions, Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within, will release on Netflix December 9.
