Kate Middleton was “mistakenly referred” to by her common name during BBC’s Armistice Day broadcast and now the network has issued an apology for the error.

The telecast, which was covered by the BBC presenter Rajini Vaidyanathan, was aired live on November 11.

“During our coverage of memorials to commemorate Armistice Day we mistakenly referred to Catherine, Princess of Wales as Kate Middleton; these were errors during hours of live broadcasting for which we apologise. Throughout our Armistice Day coverage more broadly, we referred to Catherine by her correct title,” the news corporation’s apology stated.

For context, while Kate Middleton is the name usually used to reference the future queen, “Catherine, Princess of Wales” is the official stylisation of her royal title and as a British network, BBC had prompted national backlash for the misstep which is considered commonplace for their American counterparts.

Boston University professor Arianne Chernock had explained the phenomenon to Vanity Fair in 2016, saying, “It doesn’t hurt her that the American press especially refers to her as Kate Middleton. It’s precisely her middle-class origins, and that name, which won her over to so many people in the first place. So that reminder can only help her.”

For Armistice Day, Princess Kate was front and centre for this year’s commemoration, during which she was also spotted laying a wreath at a war memorial.
