King Charles ‘never really understood’ Meghan Markle?
Royal biographer Tom Bower explores the deeply strained relationship between the Duke of Sussex and the King
Royal biographer Tom Bower describes in his book Revenge that King Charles and Meghan Markle’s relationship was far more complicated than public appearances suggested.
Bower, writing about a 2018 visit to the Castle of Mey soon after the Sussexes’ wedding, noted that the scenes of warm walks and family meals masked a deeper strain.
According to excerpts reported by the Daily Mail, the author writes that Charles, despite appearing close at times, “never really understood her or what she wanted.”
The book says friction surfaced over Meghan’s fraught relationship with her father, Thomas Markle, whose public criticism of the royal family created embarrassment and tension.
Bower alleges that the King confronted Prince Harry, asking whether Meghan might reconcile with her father to ease the situation, a moment that underscored how differently the two sides perceived the crisis.
Less than two years after the Castle of Mey visit, Harry and Meghan stepped back from senior royal duties and moved to the United States.
Bower’s portrait paints a household strained by cultural misunderstanding and competing expectations and a monarch who, for all his goodwill, struggled to bridge the divide.
