Short-lived celebrities killed by obsessive fans

Famous actors often suffer from deadly obsessions from their fans.

For notable faces in Hollywood, admiration and obsession come hand in hand, and the consequences can be catastrophic.

Here are the heartbreaking stories of celebrities who paid the ultimate price for their fame and got killed by their fans:

1. John Lennon

The Beatles band founder was shot and killed by an obsessed fan outside of his apartment building in New York City in December 1980.

A man named Mark David Chapman had purchased a gun and planned out months before killing the legendary singer.

Explaining why he killed the British musician, the murderer, as per ABC News, said during a parole hearing, “I assassinated him…because he was very, very, very famous and that’s the only reason and I was very, very, very, very much seeking self-glory, very selfish.”

The killer was charged with second-degree murder and was sentenced to 20 years of life imprisonment.

2. Christina Grimmie

This American singer, who found success on the sixth season of The Voice, was shot when she was signing autographs for fans, that’s when she caught the attention of a man named Kevin James Loibl.

Loibi, who developed an unhealthy fascination, traveled from St. Petersburg, Florida to Orlando, where Grimmie was performing at The Plaza Live.

After her performance, she was signing autographs when he shot her and took his own life shortly after.

Grimmie, who was 22 at that time, was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead half an hour after the shooting.

3. Dimebag Darrell

Darrell was a victim of the mass shooting at a nightclub in Ohio back in December 2004.

The gunman was killed by a police officer minutes later after killing the pioneering heavy metal guitarist and a founding member of the bands Pantera and Damageplan

Later, his mother alleged that he had been discharged from the United States Marine Corps due to paranoid schizophrenia about a year before the incident.

Over time, his friends claimed that he was a lifelong fan of Darrell’s band Pantera.

However, he had become increasingly erratic and even believed that the band was attempting to take his identity.

Months before the shooting, he had also rushed the stage at another Damageplan concert, causing damage to the venue but the band ultimately did not press charges.

4. Selena Quintanilla-Pérez

The iconic Latin artist was fatally shot by her fan club president and business associate Yolanda Saldívar in 1995.

The late American singer began her friendship with her murderer normally.

Soon, Saldívar took on more responsibilities on Selena’s team and became obsessive and possessive.

However, when the Bidi Bidi Bom Bom hitmaker found out that Saldívar was misusing credit card and embezzling her money worth tens of thousands, tensions began to rise between the duo.

On the day of her death, two met in a motel and began to argue about finances and the missing money and as a result, Saldívar fatally shot Selena, who was just 23.

Her murderer is currently serving 30 years to life behind bars and was recently denied parole.
