Timothée Chalamet’s 'Wonka' leaving Netflix ahead of sequel
Timothée Chalamet’s 'Wonka' delights fans before it leaves Netflix
Timothée Chalamet fans may be gearing up for his return to the Dune universe, but his hit 2023 adventure film Wonka has received a disappointing streaming update.
The movie will soon be leaving one of the world’s biggest streaming platforms, giving Netflix viewers only a short window to watch it before it departs.
Fortunately, Chalamet’s return as Willy Wonka may not be far off as production on the sequel is expected to begin soon.
Directed by Paul King and co written with Simon Farnaby, Wonka serves as a musical prequel to Roald Dahl's 1964 classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The Marty Supreme star plays a young Willy Wonka embarking on his journey as a chocolatier only to find himself caught in a sweeping criminal conspiracy involving business rivals, police, clergy and more.
It was released in theatres on December 15, 2023, Wonka captivated audiences with its playful universe and vibrant ensemble.
The film earned over $634.5 million globally against a $125 million budget, becoming a major box office success.
Critics embraced it as well, awarding the movie an 82% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes while audiences rated it an impressive 90%.
After the film’s release King discussed exploring new elements of Dahl’s world, saying, "[Dahl] makes this story-book world with these larger than life characters but at the same time, you deeply care.”
He added that he aimed to make Wonka “the emotional heart of the movie.”
Although a sequel is in development an official production start or release date has not been announced.
According to Netflix, Timothée Chalamet’s film Wonka is leaving the platform on December 1, 2025.
