Meta delays ‘Phoenix’ mixed reality glasses to 2027
Meta pushes back the launch of its mixed reality glasses, internally known as Phoenix
Meta has reportedly delayed the launch of its highly anticipated mixed reality glasses, internally known as Phoenix, shifting the expected release from late 2026 to the first half of 2027.
According to Business Insider, the project marks Meta’s next major bet in wearable technology as the company expands beyond VR headsets and its Ray-Ban smart glasses line.
The mixed reality glasses are said to resemble bulkier, high-end designs like the Apple Vision Pro, complete with an external puck-style power source.
While Meta has been exploring immersive hardware for years, Phoenix is positioned as a more ambitious step, aiming to integrate advanced displays, sensors, and new interface capabilities.
Business Insider reported that internal memos from Meta executives outline the reasoning behind the delay.
The decision followed discussions in which CEO Mark Zuckerberg emphasised that the Phoenix project needed additional time to reach a sustainable business model and deliver a noticeably higher-quality experience.
Notably, Metaverse division leaders Gabriel Aul and Ryan Cairns echoed the sentiment, saying the extra months would provide “breathing room” to refine crucial details.
The timing also aligns with recent reports from Bloomberg that Meta is preparing to reduce its metaverse budget by as much as 30%, suggesting that the company is rebalancing its priorities while still pursuing long-term hardware ambitions.
